Dear friend,
It’s with great joy and satisfaction that we’re sharing this annual report, the Macaw Recovery Network’s first. Launching MRN been exciting, fun and oh maybe a little stressful, at times! Over the course of this first year we’ve not just “set up shop”, we’ve built a really solid foundation from which we are set to make a lasting and positive impact.
In the north of Costa Rica, our work with wild Great Green Macaws is now well established and in Punta Islita, reintroduced Scarlet Macaws are breeding in the wild. As I write, we have both species with eggs in the captive breeding center too. In all areas, our work spans across three main themes, Birds, Community and Habitat. Our team is constantly improving the monitoring of population numbers and breeding pairs as well as reducing risks to wild chicks; In the north
we have supported independent social research and will now begin community outreach initiatives and we’re looking to protect, as well as restore, rainforest habitat.
Seeing all these developments has been incredibly rewarding. For me personally it’s been a roller coaster to get to this point. Before creating the Macaw Recovery Network, Sarah and I were confident there was tremendous potential to make a difference here in Costa Rica. It’s thanks to your support that we are able to stretch our wings and work towards that vision.
I am so incredibly grateful to everyone who is on this journey with us.
With my deepest thanks,
Sam Williams, PH.D.
