FUN TIP! Dedicate your gift to a loved one.
In 2019, MRN developed a Native Tree Nursery in Northern Costa Rica to help combat decades of deforestation. In particular, the team focused on the Endangered Mountain Almond tree, which Great Green Macaws are heavily reliant on for both nesting and food options. Since then, our Habitat Team has diligently collected and germinated nearly 3,000 Mountain Almond seeds that will soon be planted in Costa Rica! From collection to reforestation, the team takes great care to ensure that the Mountain Almonds receive quality care.
By adopting a Mountain Almond tree, you are helping secure a future for macaws in which they have food and nesting opportunities for generations to come!
Your gift will ensure your tree receives:
– Expert horticultural care
– Sustainable and rich compost
– Regular irrigation
– Housing in a secure nursery
– Care as its transported and planted in its new permanent home
– Regular monitoring throughout its young and vulnerable life in the wild!

Adopt NowMaryAnn survived a nest collapse as a chick and was raised at our breeding center with the hope of returning to the wild. Her first release didn’t go as planned, and an injury brought her back into care — but that setback led her to Flybird, a gentle rescue who quickly became her perfect match. With their strong bond and the skills they gained in our program, they were released together in 2022 and have been thriving ever since, exploring Punta Islita side-by-side.
When you symbolically adopt macaws like MaryAnn and Flybird, you help make stories like this possible — supporting rescue, rehabilitation, release, and long-term conservation so more macaws can return to the wild and stay there.
Your gift ensures they have:
– A dedicated team of field biologists to monitor their life post-release
– Safe and secure nest boxes
– The opportunity to raise healthy chicks
– Supplementary food while learn how to forage in the wild
– And for birds like MaryAnn and Flybird who haven’t made it to the wild yet, you support the pre-release training they need to be successful once they get there.

Adopt NowWhen the pandemic struck in 2020, many women in Costa Rica lost their jobs in hospitality and tourism. As the pandemic persisted, the options for work continued to disappear. In 2021, MRN approached a small group of women who were still struggling to find work in their rural community of Boca Tapada. What emerged from the encounter was an opportunity to unite and employ the women as rangers to conserve the Great Green Macaw.
The Women Rangers Program was originally developed as a three-month initiative to train the women in monitoring the wild Great Green Macaws in and around their community. But as the eight women grew more confident and passionate in their roles, they expressed a desire to continue working and develop their own community nursery in Boca Tapada! Today, they maintain their desire to explore and learn new skills in conservation and are becoming a unified team as well as empowered individuals who are capable of extraordinary things. While our veteran Women Rangers continue to manage their nursery, our newest additions to the team, joined in 2025, are working to restore the Sarapiquí Rainforest Reserve. Together, the Women Rangers are planting the seeds of the future!
By sponsoring our Women Rangers Program, you are helping secure a future for these women as they pursue careers in conservation management and help Great Green Macaws thrive in their community.
Your gift will allow the Women Rangers to:
– Receive training in habitat restoration
– Visit and learn from conservation partners
– Manage the nursery, its seeds, and seedlings
– Research and practice new horticulture techniques
– Gain hands-on training in the field from naturalist experts
– Organize reforestation events

Adopt NowKitKat is a 30-year-old Great Green Macaw at our breeding center in Punta Islita, Costa Rica. KitKat has had a challenging few years at the breeding center — after unsuccessful attempts to hatch chicks with her first love, Cliff (despite her best efforts — she was such a dutiful mama to those eggs!) and an illness that had her fighting for her life, she was removed from the breeding program in 2021. Though Cliff and KitKat had a love like no other, the future of their species hangs in the balance, and so he was compassionately re-paired to continue raising chicks for the wild.
Without a partner and terribly shy, KitKat struggled to make friends once she left the breeding program. Even though she got along with one or two other birds, she never formed as strong a bond as the one she had with Cliff. Until this year, when she met Ice. With a new partner and her illness long behind her, KitKat is back in the breeding program. It’s been a long journey, but through it all, she has remained the sweetest bird in our care. Nobody deserves a happy ending more!
By adopting KitKat, you are helping care for rescued macaws like her, ensuring that they have:
– Clean and safe aviaries
– Stimulating enrichment
– Healthy diets
– Safe and secure nest boxes
– The opportunity to raise strong chicks
– Quality veterinarian care
