  • Mountain Almond Tree

    $50

PLANT A TREE TO SECURE A FUTURE FOR MACAWS

In 2019, MRN developed a Native Tree Nursery in Northern Costa Rica to help combat decades of deforestation. In particular, the team focused on the Endangered Mountain Almond tree, which Great Green Macaws are heavily reliant on for both nesting and food options. Since then, our Habitat Team has diligently collected and germinated nearly 3,000 Mountain Almond seeds that will soon be planted in Costa Rica! From collection to reforestation, the team takes great care to ensure that the Mountain Almonds receive quality care.

By adopting a Mountain Almond tree, you are helping secure a future for macaws in which they have food and nesting opportunities for generations to come!

Your gift will ensure your tree receives:
    – Expert horticultural care
    – Sustainable and rich compost
    – Regular irrigation
    – Housing in a secure nursery
    – Care as its transported and planted in its new permanent home
    – Regular monitoring throughout its young and vulnerable life in the wild!

  • WESLEY AND BUTTERCUP

    $100

GIVE MACAWS LIKE WESLEY AND BUTTERCUP A HOME

In early 2021, our Field Team discovered a pair of reintroduced Scarlet Macaws exploring one of the artificial nest boxes we constructed and installed in the Punta Islita area. Not knowing if the birds were interested in destroying the nest, ‘playing house’, or serious about raising chicks, the team kept watch. After a couple of months, the team noticed the Macaws staying closer to the nest more regularly and even sleeping inside – it was the first time this pair had been documented nesting. When the team inspected closer, they found eggs and roughly three months after their discovery, one chick named Brutus fledged! For Wesley and Buttercup, finding a natural and safe nest cavity in a secondary forest is difficult, which made their discovery of the artificial nest a reason to celebrate. It’s because of that nest and its safety that Brutus was able to survive to fledging. It’s also extremely likely that Wesley and Buttercup will return to that same nest season after season to raise more healthy chicks!

By adopting Wesley and Buttercup, you are helping Macaws establish and breed in the wild, bringing back these species from where they were once extinct. Your gift ensures they have:
    – Safe and secure nest boxes
    – The opportunity to raise healthy chicks
    – Added security of camera traps in nearby branches
    – A dedicated team of field biologists to monitor the health of the entire family

  • Women Rangers

    $150

SPONSOR OUR WOMEN RANGERS AND EMPOWER LOCAL COMMUNITIES

When the pandemic struck in 2020, many women in Costa Rica lost their jobs in hospitality and tourism. As the pandemic persisted, the options for work continued to disappear. In 2021, MRN approached a small group of women who were still struggling to find work in their rural community of Boca Tapada. What emerged from the encounter was an opportunity to unite and employ the women as rangers to conserve the Great Green Macaw.

The Women Rangers Program was originally developed as a three-month initiative to train the women in monitoring the wild Great Green Macaws in and around their community. But as the eight women grew more confident and passionate in their roles, they expressed a desire to continue working and develop their own community nursery in Boca Tapada! Today, they maintain their desire to explore and learn new skills in conservation and are becoming a unified team as well as empowered individuals who are capable of extraordinary things.

By sponsoring our Women Rangers Program, you are helping secure a future for these women as they pursue careers in conservation management and help Great Green Macaws thrive in their community.

Your gift will allow the Women Rangers to:
    – Receive training in nursery management
    – Visit and learn from conservation partners
    – Build the Community Nursery in Boca Tapada
    – Research and practice new horticulture techniques
    – Manage the nursery, its seeds, and seedlings
    – Organize reforestation events

  • Little Girl

    $200

Give rescued macaws like Little Girl hope

Little Girl is a 27-year-old Great Green Macaw at our breeding Center in Punta Islita, Costa Rica. She is an incredibly sweet bird who has overcome loss and heartache, but today she lives a happy and fulfilled life. Her heartache occurred in 2018, when she lost both her first chick and her partner within a month of each other. Our team was saddened for her, but also determined that this tragedy would not limit her ability to thrive and have a family. We moved Little Girl into a social aviary where a couple of eligible bachelors were living, hoping she would at least find a good friend. In 2019, it seemed she had a special connection with a male named Bandaid. Encouraged by this development, our team moved them into a breeding aviary in 2020 to let them have some privacy. It seems they enjoyed each other’s company as more than just friends, because a few weeks later three developing eggs were discovered in their nest box. Not only did all three chicks hatch, but all three fledged! Today, those chicks have weaned and are currently preparing for a life in the wild, while Little Girl and Bandaid continue to thrive in their relationship and prepare for raising more healthy chicks!

By adopting Little Girl, you are helping care for rescued macaws like her, ensuring that they have:
    – Clean and safe aviaries
    – Stimulating enrichment
    – Healthy diets
    – Safe and secure nest boxes
    – The opportunity to raise strong chicks
    – Quality veterinarian care
